Travel Ready! The second generation of the Reininger family prides themselves on treating the customer as king. For more than 69 years, Edwards-Everything Travel has been recognized nationally as one of the finest travel stores in the United States. Today, Edwards is run by the second generation of the Reininger family: siblings Randy MacKenzie, Marty Reininger, and Leslie Ebert, along with their spouses Laura Reininger and Fred Ebert. As world travel has evolved over the years to be more popular and more advanced, so, too, has this powerful family business. Edwards Luggage was founded in 1946 by siblings Arthur and Edward Reininger and their sister Sophie Levy, with the first location in downtown San Mateo. World War II had just ended and the time seemed right to transition from the army surplus type of products that sister Sophie was selling in Monterey, California, to higher end luggage and travel goods for the new traveler. In 1956, Edwards opened as one of the original tenants at Stanford Shopping Center where they continue their retail business today. Today, it’s clearly a family affair all the way around. The exceptional service the family provides to their customers is a result of them being intimately connected with the stores, managers, and sales staff. “Our family and sales staff are experts on travel products and strive to create a positive experience for our new and returning customers,” says Marty. “We all work together to provide helpful information to our clients about the right items to take on each trip and to answer all their travel questions. We even teach how to master packing lite!” The whole family lives in Palo Alto and Portola Valley and can be seen at the Stanford Shopping Center and Hillsdale Mall stores consistently. Being a family business up against department stores and ecommerce giants can be tough, but the family learned to play upon its strengths and service, and knowledge of the industry has been key. As Marty notes, “The business and retail climate has also spurred us to adapt and evolve.” The family recently changed the company name from Edwards Luggage to Edwards-Everything Travel to more aptly reflect the depth and breadth of the their offerings. Edwards and the Reininger family show no sign of slowing down. As Marty explains, “In addition to adding new stores around the Bay Area, we’ve recently signed a new lease at Stanford Shopping Center and launched a new website. More importantly, the next generation includes two grandchildren who may continue our legacy. Let’s hope they love travel!” We’re counting on it.
